About The Provider

Dr. Schmalstieg completed his neurology residency and multiple sclerosis fellowship, as well as a post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Charles Howe, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN prior to joining the University of Minnesota faculty in 2013. His clinical interests include the care of patients with multiple sclerosis and other CNS autoimmune conditions including neuromyelitis optica, sarcoidosis, and MOG-IgG associated disease. Dr. Schmalstieg's primary research focus is the mechanisms by which axons (nerve fibers) are injured in the brain and spinal cord in the setting of demyelination, including clinical and translational studies.
